Farm machine with enormous capacity

AT A FYNSK MACHINE COOPERATION, OPERATIONS MANAGER MARTIN ØSTERBY CALCULATES THE CAPACITY UTILIZATION OF A NEW SAMSON PGII28 WITH 36 METER SAMSON SHB4 HOSE BOOM WITH 100%. ANNUAL.

It was late on March 23 before manure delivery could begin for the Funen machine collaboration between four properties. On the total of 2,300 hectares, 70,000 to 80,000 tonnes of manure must be distributed and therefore it was run around the clock in the first few days.

- We ran continuously for 16 days and at one point were able to deliver 2,600 cubic meters in 24 hours. The explanation is that we could deliver up to 55 tonnes of manure per hectares before maize and that it is all optimized without too much driving on the roads, says operations manager Martin Østerby, who is responsible for the field work on the four properties.

For the season, the farm has invested in a new manure wagon, a SAMSON PGII28 with a new SAMSON SHB4 hose boom with a working width of 36 metres.

FROM 24 TO 36 METERS

- We are in the process of converting from 24 meters to 36 meters track and have therefore chosen to invest in new SAMSON slurry equipment for this season, says Martin Østerby.

- At the beginning of the season, we divided the manure into two allocations in the winter seed, but as the season progressed and the weather became stable, more and more of the fields received the entire amount at once. This is one of the explanations for the large capacity we have been able to achieve this year, explains the operations manager.

- The capacity is calculated based on the fact that we have to rent for the delivery of 20,000 cubic meters of manure for three out of five years. In addition, we have 70-100 hectares where a wheeled trailer would be appropriate. Here we will also rent a machine station for the work.

OPTIMIZATION

Martin Østerby cites these factors as important in the effort to be able to optimize the capacity to the utmost and thus achieve 100% utilization of the SAMSON manure wagon every year.

- It is a bit unusual for a farm to invest in a new, advanced manure truck. After all, the vast majority of manure trucks run at machine stations, which are very competitive in terms of manure application. But in our case, we have been able to invest in our own manure truck, because we can calculate 100% utilization each year, he explains.

- And then there are also some advantages to being able to dispose of our own work processes all the time. After all, the machine stations have regard for their entire customer base, and we avoid that, points out Martin Østerby.

MINIMUM TWO READS PER HOUR

In his efforts to maintain a high utilization of the investment, Martin Østerby is constantly calculating the need to insert truck transport and a buffer tank in the process. Likewise, access conditions for lorries and the number of transfers of the buffer tank must be considered in relation to and avoid unnecessary waste of time.

- As a basic rule, we must always be able to maintain a capacity of more than two loads per hour. Of course, a lot depends on the delivery quantity per hectare, for example for the 600 hectares of maize we apply manure to.

HEIGHT SENSORS

After a thorough test period, 2020 is the first season in which the new height sensor on the SHB4 drag hose boom from SAMSON is on the market.

- Especially in the 36 meter version and with the slightly hilly terrain here on Funen, it is a big advantage to have height sensors on the boom. It is a pleasure to see the boom adapt to the terrain while driving and for the two permanent machine operators it is a huge relief not to have to constantly pay attention to the boom and risk it hitting the ground. It's a wide boom to keep an eye on, says the Funen operations manager.

- It is a piece of advanced technology with four distributors out on the boom and yaw motors and so on, acknowledges Martin Østerby in his enthusiasm for the new SAMSON drag hose boom.

TURNKEY READY FOR THE SEASON

The connection with the company's John Deere 8345R took place at Samson Agrolize in connection with the delivery of the new manure wagon before the season.

- There was also an employee with us on the first day to start the machine. But after that it all ran smoothly.

- I am quite impressed by how painlessly the initiation and operation of a piece of such advanced technology actually takes place. In fact, we are not used to it going so smoothly when we invest in advanced gear that must be used so intensively throughout an entire spring. Here I must say that Samson Agrolize do it well, says Martin Østerby unprompted.
